Women’s Alliance for Peace is born

New York, November 5, 2019. Yesterday was constituted at the headquarters of the Alliance of Civilizations, the Women’s Alliance for Peace, an initiative promoted by the Women for Africa Foundation together with the aforementioned United Nations organization.

Miguel Ángel Moratinos, UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, and María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, President of Women for Africa, were the signatories of the agreement creating this initiative, a new instrument to reactivate the participation of women in mediation work and peace processes in conflicts on the African continent.

The Alliance of Women for Peace will be led by a commission composed of Moratinos and Fernández de la Vega and will have a task force for action in the field, which will include African women experts in mediation and the fight against violence. An Advisory Council will also be set up in the coming weeks, which will be made up of African leaders of recognized international prestige.

This initiative is designed both for immediate action on the ground and for reflection and encounter. In this regard, the Advisory Board will meet twice a year, once in Madrid and once in New York, with the Foundation and the Alliance as organizers at their respective headquarters.

The first project of the Women’s Alliance for Peace will be launched in 2020.
