Madrid, June 9, 2025. As part of its strong commitment to advancing the African continent through the empowerment of women, the Women for Africa Foundation is proud to present its latest audiovisual production, The Science of African Women, at Casa África. The documentary, which highlights the transformative role of African women scientists, will be screened on June 25 at 7:00 p.m., with free admission until full capacity is reached.
This screening marks the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Science by Women / Ellas Investigan program—a pioneering initiative that promotes female leadership in African scientific research and has enabled more than 150 women scientists to complete research stays in top research centers across Spain.
The Science of African Women, directed by Begoña Piña and Pedro Mambrú, gives voice to senior African researchers who have taken part in the program. Through their personal accounts, the film delves into the structural challenges faced by women in science, the contrasts between Global North and Global South contexts, and the power of applied research to transform societies. Rather than focusing solely on the obstacles, the documentary is also a tribute to the ingenuity, resilience, and social impact of these women, who lead research in fields such as health, energy, agriculture, and climate change—always guided by the priorities of their communities.
The event will be followed the next day, June 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., by a roundtable discussion titled “Scientific Cooperation as a Key Driver of Progress in Any Field.” The session will bring together experts from the scientific and academic worlds, as well as one of the African researchers from the program. Representatives from the Women for Africa Foundation, the Canary Islands Institute of Technology, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands will share insights on the strategic value of international scientific collaboration at Casa África.
This roundtable aims to create a space for reflection on how cooperation among institutions, disciplines, and countries fosters innovation and provides effective responses to global challenges such as climate emergencies, health crises, and disparities in access to knowledge. In this context, science emerges as a key tool for achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
Both events are open to the public and will take place at Casa África’s headquarters, further strengthening the ties between the Canary Islands—a region that has always supported our programs—and the African continent through knowledge, equality, and shared progress.
