BIOMEDICAL AND HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE (IUIBS-ULPGC)
Period of enjoyment: from January 2026 to June 2027.
The University Institute of Biomedical and Healthcare Research (iUIBS), of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has been created in order to bring
together research scientists, research programmes, postgraduate teaching personnel, financial resources and sufficient instrumental means to seek the advance of knowledge, development and innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology, by means of excellence in scientific research.
Research proposals presented to IUIBS-ULPGC should be focused on research undertaken in the different research groups affiliated to the Institute. To ensure that the applicants’ projects align with this research, please check in advance the IUIBS’ research lines. Please contact Silvia Muñoz Descalzo if you are interested in applying with the IUIBS indicating the proposed research line you are interested in.
iUIBS – Molecular and Translational Pharmacology – ULPGC Biopharm:https://www.iuibs.ulpgc.es/web-grupos/biopharm/ Our research group focuses on the discovery and preclinical development—both in vitro and in vivo—of novel small-molecule compounds inspired by natural products, with potential therapeutic applications in oncology, immuno-inflammatory, and metabolic diseases. A central line of our work involves the preclinical development of compounds that modulate the JAK/STAT/SOCS signaling pathway and nuclear receptors, including estrogen receptors (SERM/SERD), glucocorticoid, androgen, and liver X receptors (LXR). These compounds are being evaluated for their potential in treating solid and hematological cancers, as well as metabolic and inflammatory conditions such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. Additionally, we are exploring drug repurposing strategies using nanoemulsion-based delivery systems, with a particular focus on statins for the treatment of osteosarcoma and other cancer types. Another strategic area of our group is Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics, which has led to the establishment of the Functional Genomics Service (SGEFUN), now part of the Scientific Services of the Institute for Biomedical and Healthcare Research (IUIBS-ULPGC).
*IUIBS-ULPGC does not provide nor has any requirements regarding accommodation. It is the fellow’s responsibility to secure it and inform both parties, at least, 1 month before arrival in Spain.
