Madrid, 1st December, 2017. The jury for the “African Women in Spain” contest praised the winning photos in this fifth edition yesterday. The first prize, worth €1,250, went to Abdellah Doulfikar Mouatassim for the shot of a young Moroccan woman with her newly born in a hospital in Huelva.

Juan Antonio García Pérez won the second prize, worth €500, for the photograph “Soledad” (“Solitude”), taken in the Almerian town of Vícar.

The members of the jury (the gallery owner and photographer Blanca Berlín, the photographer Sofía Moro, and the expert in communication and member of the foundation’s board of trustees, Ángeles Puerta) stressed the careful composition of the winning photographs and the documentary authenticity of the moment they were taken, as well as their great technical quality.

In addition to the winning photographs, the jury decided to reserve a special mention with no economic award for the picture “Atrévete a soñar” (“Dare to dream”) taken by Jesús Martínez Moreno in Seville.

In this 5th edition of the contest, 120 people have taken part with almost 300 photographs, which will now form part of the graphic archive with which the foundation is attempting to document the real situation of African women living in our country. Since the Women for Africa Foundation launched this initiative in 2013, a total of 1,500 photos have been received, showing women from the neighbouring continent.

The photographic contest “African Women in Spain” forms part of the programme of the same name, via which the foundation seeks to foster greater and better mutual knowledge with the African women living in our country. Other activities take place as part of this project, such as the meetings held with African women in different parts of the country that enable us to get first-hand knowledge of their needs and concerns, as well as different training courses aimed at bolstering leadership in areas such as university education and female entrepreneurship.

Once again this year, Women for Africa is grateful for the great reception the competition has had. It calls on the participants to take part again next year, when the call will open in May to coincide with Africa Day.

Many thanks to all those who took part in this fifth edition of the competition, and congratulations to the winners.
