Africa is not a homogeneous continent

We are talking about a continent of about 1000 million inhabitants spread out over 54 countries over an area of more than 30 million square kilometres, where 1,500 different languages are spoken.

Population and politics

Africa's population is mostly black, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. In North Africa the population is mainly Arabic and Berber, while in the Sahel, Arabs, Berbers and black people coexist. From a religious point of view, Africa is equally diverse with Christianity and Islam as the predominant religions. On the political side, we find all kinds of situations, from full democracies such as Ghana, to failed states like Somalia, as well as the recent unrest in North Africa or the creation of a new state in January 2011: South Sudan
