Dr. Mable Mutengo wins the lll “Science by Women” contest in scientific dissemination.

Dr. Mable Mutengo is the winner of the III Edition of the Science by Women 2024 Contest in science dissemination that we carry out thanks to the support of Eurofins. Mable holds a PhD in Medical Parasitology from the University of Zambia and is currently Director and Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Basic and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Mutengo did her research stay at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, Spain.

Dr. Mutengo’s science outreach project, entitled “Empowering Communities: Disseminating Research on Schistosomiasis and other Intestinal Parasitic infections for Enhanced Awareness and Prevention” focuses on raising awareness and promoting prevention strategies for schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites. These diseases disproportionately affect children and women in endemic regions. Given their high prevalence in Zambia, addressing these diseases is crucial to mitigate their serious health consequences. Your project aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and community awareness by:

1. Develop accessible educational materials and programs to inform communities about the causes, symptoms and prevention of these diseases.
2. Collaborate with local health workers to ensure accurate dissemination of information and resources.
3. Launch community initiatives among children and their mothers to encourage preventive measures and promote healthier living environments.

The impact of this project is far-reaching. By increasing awareness and prevention strategies, it aims to reduce the prevalence of schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites, ultimately improving the health and quality of life of countless people in affected regions. This initiative not only addresses immediate health issues, but also promotes a sustainable approach to community health education and disease prevention.

We would like to thank the Eurofins Foundation for their trust and support in this project.
