The Biscay Provincial Government takes on “Science By Women”

Bilbao, 4th July, 2017. The Biscay Provincial Government’s Department of Employment, Social Inclusion and Equality is going to back scholarships for three African women researchers, paying for them to stay for six months working in research centres in our land.

These scholarships are to be carried out based on an agreement with Women for Africa signed by our president, Ms. María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, and by the Head of Employment, Social Inclusion and Equality, Teresa Laespada.

The agreement, which falls within the “Science by Women” programme, is an example of policies covering many areas because, as the department head Laespada explains, “It has a lot to do with equality, visibility and empowerment for women,” as well with “cooperation for development, commitment to education and research… and directly looking to Africa.”

Laespada also recalls that the Steering Plan for Cooperation recently approved by the Provincial Government clearly indicates the intention “to place our sights directly on Africa.”

For her part, Ms. María Teresa Fernández de la Vega showed her appreciation for the Provincial Government’s participation in the programme, stressing the importance of women’s presence in areas where knowledge is generated such as in research, and of giving visibility to their work in their countries and around the world.

The “Science by Women” programme has been carried out in recent years in different technological and research centres of international renown. The agreement signed today will allow it to be applied in Biscay.

Specifically, three African women scientists or technologists, three university lecturers in their countries of origin, will be given scholarships to stay for six months working in research centres in this land.

The project is committed to supporting training in research at the highest level for these women, which will enable them to train their own research teams in their universities and to establish ties and networks with European universities and projects.
